Komatsu 170E-5 Workshop Manual

I’ve seen more than a few guys crack a cylinder head because they guessed the torque sequence or used a generic spec from a website that had nothing to do with a Komatsu 170E-5. That’s an expensive lesson. If you’re putting wrenches on a diesel that runs heavy equipment, you need the exact factory numbers – not a typed-up summary from someone who never touched the engine. This is the real thing: 341 pages of Komatsu’s own workshop manual for the 170E-5 series. No reprints, no aftermarket condensation. What you get is the same binder that dealer techs are supposed to follow.
Komatsu 170E-5 Workshop Manual – What’s Inside
This manual is organized exactly like a factory shop manual should be. The table of contents on page 3 (yeah, I’m looking at it) lists every section: from the index and foreword all the way through troubleshooting. The index on page 2 shows the organization list – that’s how you find the specific Form Number for each section. You don’t flip pages blind. The Foreword includes a Standard Tightening Torque Table. That’s your first stop before you torque anything. Don’t skip it. The manual also explains how to read the electric wire codes and handle the push-pull couplers. If you’re a DIY guy working on a 170E-5 in your barn, read the Safety Notice first.
Structure, Function and Maintenance Standard: Part 1
Section 10 is where the real work lives. It covers the intake and exhaust system (air cleaner, turbocharger, EGR system) and the entire engine unit – cylinder head, block, liners, crankshaft, camshaft, connecting rods, pistons, rings, pins, flywheel, vibration damper, timing gear, valve system, rocker arms, crosshead, tappets, push rods. I’m not listing it to pad word count; those are the exact chapters from the book. Each one includes the factory wear limits and clearance specs. For example, the valve clearance adjustment procedure is in Section 30, but the standard values for those clearances are in Section 20. You need both sections open to do it right.
341 Pages of Factory Spec Data
Three hundred forty one pages. That’s not a PDF of bullet points; that’s a complete service manual. Section 20 alone – the Standard Service Value Table – gives you the numbers for testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting. It includes running-in standards and performance test standards. When you’re bleeding the fuel system or testing oil pressure, those specs come from this table, not from a forum post. Section 30 lists the Testing and Adjusting Tools you’ll need. If you don’t have the right gauge or adapter, don’t start the job. The manual tells you exactly what to use.
Does the Manual Cover the CRI Fuel System?
Yes. The Common Rail Injection (CRI) system is covered in Part 2 of the Structure section. You get the system diagram, the outline of how it works, fuel piping, fuel filter, the electric priming pump, and the engine controller cooler. There’s a dedicated procedure for releasing residual pressure in the fuel system before you open any line – I’ve seen guys get a face full of diesel because they didn’t do that. The manual also walks you through no-injection cranking, reduced cylinder mode operation, and measuring leakage from the pressure limiter. That’s the kind of detail you need when the engine won’t fire.
Get the Right Torque Values from the Source
Don’t use a generic torque chart for fasteners that see combustion pressure. The Komatsu 170E-5 manual includes the Standard Tightening Torque Table right in the Foreword. It covers bolts, nuts, and flanges. If you need the specific torque for the cylinder head, that’s in the Engine Unit chapter. I’ve torqued plenty of heads, and using the wrong value or sequence is a guaranteed leak or gasket failure. This manual gives you the factory sequence and the ft-lb (or Nm – there’s a conversion table on the same page) so you can do it right the first time. No guesswork.
Troubleshooting: Mechanical and Electrical Diagnostics
Section 40 is the troubleshooting section, split into mechanical (S-mode) and electrical (E-mode). S-mode covers 16 problems: poor starting, won’t start, won’t pick up, stops during operation, rough running, lack of power, black smoke, excessive oil consumption, contaminated oil, coolant issues, oil pressure drops, oil level rises, overheating, abnormal noise, excessive vibration. Each one has a flowchart. E-mode covers error codes like 111/CA111 (ECM internal failure), 115/CA115 (speed sensor error), 122/CA122 (charge air pressure sensor high), and many more. If you get a code on a 170E-5, this manual tells you what to test and in what order.

- Can I use this manual for basic maintenance like oil changes?
- Yes, but this is a workshop manual, not an operator’s manual. It assumes you know how to drain oil – it focuses on specs and repair procedures.
- What does the troubleshooting section cover?
- It covers 16 mechanical issues (S-mode) like poor starting, overheating, vibration, plus electrical error codes (E-mode) such as ECM failures, sensor faults, and throttle issues. Each symptom has a step-by-step chart with test points and expected values. The E-mode section includes specific error codes with diagnostic flows – for example, code 122/CA122 for charge air pressure sensor high tells you which wires to check and what voltage range is normal. That’s way more useful than a generic “check sensor” line. You get the exact logic the factory uses.
