
I’ve been turning wrenches since before most of you were born, and I’ve yet to meet an aftermarket manual that didn’t leave me chasing my tail. They skip the torque specs for the transmission control valve, they blur the wiring diagrams, and they sure as hell don’t tell you the bleed sequence for the steering brake. If you’re working on a D85C-21, you need the real documentation – the Komatsu D85C-21 2008 Workshop Manual. This is the factory binder: 554 pages of actual procedure, printed in Japan by Komatsu in 2008. No reprints, no guesses. You get the exact same data the dealer techs use.
General Specs: Know Your Machine
Section 01 opens with a general assembly drawing, specifications, a weight table, and the table of oil and coolant quantities. Page 01-1 gives you the machine serial number range (36551 and up) and confirms the S6D125-2 engine. That table of capacities is exactly what you need when flushing the transmission or filling the final drives. Don’t eyeball it – the numbers are in quarts and gallons.
Structure and Function: What the Hydraulics Diagrams Actually Show
Section 10 is where the meat lives. Power train hydraulic piping diagrams, system diagrams, circuit diagrams – they’re all there, including the TORQFLOW transmission, transmission control valve, and transmission lubrication valve. The steering and brake control section covers the bevel gear shaft, steering clutch, steering brake, and the steering main relief valve. You’ll also find the actual electrical wiring diagram and electrical circuit diagram. Need to trace a wire? It’s in this section, not blurred or missing like in a third-party scan.
Does the Manual Cover the S6D125-2 Engine?
It does, but with a catch. The manual references the 125-2 Series Engine Shop Manual for the engine itself. For the D85C-21 this workshop covers everything else: transmission, steering, brakes, winch, counterweight, cab, and heater. You get the valve clearance adjustment procedure (page 20-1 for the standard value table), fuel injection timing, compression pressure measurement – all the critical adjustments that keep that S6D125-2 running right.
Testing and Adjusting: Where the Real Work Happens
Section 20 is money. It starts with standard value tables for engine and chassis related parts – torque specs, pressures, clearances. Then it walks you through adjusting valve clearance, measuring compression, testing and adjusting fuel injection timing, measuring engine oil pressure, bleeding air, adjusting stroke and linkage. That linkage section alone covers eight adjustments: fuel control, gear shift lever, steering lever, brake pedal travel, brake pedal linkage, counterweight control, boom kickout control, and winch control. If you’ve ever spent a day chasing a sticky brake pedal, you’ll appreciate having the factory procedure. The troubleshooting section for engine (S mode) and hydraulic/mechanical (H mode) is exhaustive – from S-1 starting poor performance through H-8. Page 20-1 lists the tools you need for testing and adjusting, so you can gather your kit before you start. This is not a manual that assumes you’ll “figure it out.”
Torque Specs and Valve Clearance: Factory Numbers Only
Aftermarket manuals love to list “typical” torque values. That’s how you end up with a stripped transmission valve body bolt or a steering brake that doesn’t hold. This manual gives you the Komatsu-specified torque for every fastener in the power train, from the torque converter mounting bolts to the final drive carrier. The valve clearance adjustment procedure includes the exact feeler gauge thickness in thousandths of an inch. Trust the factory numbers. That’s all I’ll say.
Why This 554-Page OEM Manual Saves You Time
If you’re also working on earlier models, the Komatsu D85C-21 1995 Workshop Manual covers the previous generation, and the Komatsu D85C-21 2005 Field Assembly Instruction is helpful for assembly-only tasks. For wheel loaders, similar hydraulic principles apply to the Komatsu WA65-5 WA70-5 WA80-5 2005 Workshop Manual. But for the 2008 D85C-21, this is the only factory document. No generic aftermarket reprint – you get original OEM content.

Never skip the safety notice on page 3 – it’s there because people have gotten hurt from improper locking procedures. Follow the steps exactly and you’ll have a properly adjusted brake that won’t overheat.
