Tightening Torques for the 16-Valve Engine

Section 10-0101 lists every critical torque for the 16-valve engine. Whether you’re bolting down the main bearing caps or the cylinder head, you get Nm and the tightening sequence. I’ve had guys tell me “I just snugged it and it held” – then they come back with a head gasket leak. The manual gives you the angle after the initial torque. Engine Removal and Installation Sequence

Camshaft Setting and Cylinder Head Installation

Section 15 covers the camshafts and cylinder head. Critical pages: 15-101 for checking and adjusting cam timing, 15-110 for cylinder head tightening. That page tells you the threaded fastener specs – not just torque, but the sequence and the angle. For Model 89 onward there’s a separate procedure (15-104 a) to account for the different cam sprocket. The manual also shows you how to find TDC on the cam sprocket (15-104 b) – a step that trips up even experienced mechanics. Don’t rely on memory; these camshaft specifications (15-112 b) include wear limits you absolutely need when measuring lobes. And if you need to remove the valve springs, the Sauer tool is required (15-118). The manual lists the tool – it’s not a suggestion. I’ve done that job without the tool and it’s a headache. Get the tool, or at least know what the factory uses.

Pistons and Cylinder Bore Checking

Section 13-102 gives the procedure for checking pistons and cylinder bore. You need a micrometer and bore gauge. The manual tells you the factory tolerances and wear limits. For pistons from Model 89 onward (13-103), there’s a different ring pack. If you mistakenly use earlier pistons, you’ll wipe the cylinder. The manual explicitly states the part number differences. I’ve rebuilt 944 engines where the owner brought non-OEM pistons – and the manual’s spec saved me from honing the wrong clearance. Trust the factory data.

Why OEM Matters – Even in 1991

Can I use this manual for a 944 Turbo?
Only for the engine. The turbo-specific systems (boost control, wastegate) aren’t in this base manual. Get the separate Turbo supplement.
What torque specs are listed for the cylinder head?
Page 15-110 gives the initial torque (about 20 Nm/15 lb-ft), then an angle turn of 90° + 90° + 90° for the 16-valve engine. The manual also shows the tightening sequence – start from the center and work outward in three passes. This is critical to avoid warping the head. Don’t skip the angle. I’ve had customers who used a torque wrench only and didn’t angle – those heads leaked within 500 miles. The manual explicitly states the angle using a protractor tool, so you do it right.
