If you’re wrenching on an Isuzu 3LA1, 3LB1, 3LD1 industrial diesel engine and you don’t have the factory Workshop Manual on the bench, you’re flying blind. The manual gives you the exact sequence for tightening main bearing caps – no generic chart. If you skip the step that tells you to lubricate the bolt threads with engine oil before torquing, you’ll get false readings. That’s the kind of detail aftermarket reprints leave out.
Section 4 – Cooling System: Factory Procedure for Overheating
The Cooling system section (page 87) covers thermostat testing, water pump clearance, and fan belt tension. I’ve had guys call me asking why their 3LD1 runs hot after a rebuild. Nine times out of ten they didn’t check the impeller clearance per spec. The manual tells you the maximum wear limit – use a feeler gauge, not your eyeball. Don’t trust a generic cooling system guide for these engines; the flow direction on the Isuzu pump is different.

The table of contents lays out eight sections total. Section 3 is the Lubricating System – oil pump clearances, relief valve spring specs. Section 5 is the Fuel System – injection timing, governor adjustments, and the injection pump removal procedure. Section 7 lists the Special Tool part numbers you need for pulling injectors and setting timing. Section 8 is a Conversion Table for inch-to-metric torques. You pull that table out when the aftermarket torque wrench reads in Nm and the manual gives ft-lb.
One thing I tell every new tech: never open a bolt on a 3LB1 without checking Section 6 first. The troubleshooting chart will save you an hour of chasing a fuel issue that’s really a valve clearance problem.
What Torque Values Are in the Conversion Table?
Page 113 (Conversion Table) lists factors for converting ft-lb to Nm and vice versa. But the actual torque specs are embedded in each section – cylinder head bolts on page 27, connecting rod nuts on page 42. The manual uses both units in places, but you’ll want to verify with the conversion table if your torque wrench is metric. This is where having the Workshop Manual matters – the conversion factors are printed by Isuzu, not guessed by a copy editor.

Use the Troubleshooting Section Before You Guess
Section 6 (page 105) has a two-page chart. It lists “Engine will not start” with possible causes: fuel filter restriction, injection timing off, compression low. Then it gives the corrective action – check fuel system, check timing marks, perform compression test. That’s it. No filler. Follow that order and you won’t replace parts you don’t need.
